AuthorJeffEyesRimmer It’s been goals galore this season in the W League. The record for most goals scored in a match was equalled (12 goals), Ashleigh Sykes scored 4 goals in one game and the quality of the football has been fantastic. This season has not seen any team truly dominate, with the minor premiership going down to the wire. Canberra Utd were the eventual winners of the Minor Premiership and now go into the finals as the favourites to win the grand final. So who will be contesting the finals and who do we think we will be victorious? Well the semi-finals pit the best attacking teams against the best defensive teams so will it be attack or defence that make it to the final? Canberra United (1st)
Very much a team on form and were the team to challenge the dominance of Melbourne City from last season. They played lovely attacking football and in Ashleigh Sykes they had a player that could finish off the chances they created with their passing style. Sykes bagged 12 goals this season, with Canberra scoring 33 goals in total. Canberra will be the team to beat but they will be up against a determined Melbourne City in the semi-finals. That being said we think Canberra will be the Grand Final champions. Perth Glory (2nd) A 93rd minute winner against the Western Sydney Wanderers meant that Perth Glory snatched 2nd place from Sydney FC. In 2015 they were minor premiers and won the grand final before an awful 2016 saw them second from bottom. Perth were very much back to the 2015 team this season though. We said at the beginning of the season that Sam Kerr would be key for them and that was very much the case, scoring 10 goals and making up for missing much of last season through injury. Perth will be up against Sydney FC in the semi-final and it will interesting to see if they can break down the second best defence in the league. We think that they may struggle to break them down and will bow out in the semi. Sydney FC (3rd) Second best defence and joint second best attack, Sydney FC have been difficult to break down this season and the goals have been spread throughout the team. They gave away sloppy goals in the final league game loss to Adelaide though and that meant they ended up third in the league. Perth did beat Sydney 1-0 this season but we think they will come through against Perth and set up a Sydney vs Canberra final. Melbourne City (4th) Was it a case of second season syndrome from City? After no losses and being the best attacking and defensive team in the league last year it seems that other teams have worked out how to break down City. While they were still in with a chance at the minor premiership, until recently the air of invincibility was very much broken. They still have a potent attack that could hurt Canberra, with Jess Fishlock scoring 6 goals this season. They have one win a piece this season, both times resulting in a 2-1 score line, so be prepared for some goals. We think the club from the Capitol will edge it though. What do you think? Do you agree with us that Canberra will win the Grand Final? Let us know. |
