AuthorBoth Outcasts It’s the one game that most football fans have been looking forward to this week, with Non-League Sutton United taking on Premier League Arsenal in the FA Cup. Although the FA Cup has lost part of its gloss over the past few years these are the matches that it’s known for. If you are a neutral it is likely that you will be supporting the underdog in this encounter.
At the time of writing there are 105 places separating Arsenal from Sutton in the English Pyramid, this really is David versus Goliath stuff. However, giant killings do happen, Lincoln just proved it. Most of us would expect Arsenal to comfortably win this game but if Sutton United are to beat them tonight, how can they do it? AuthorJeffEyesRimmer Being British means that the story of England winning the 1966 World Cup has been told to me on so many occasions I can’t remember. However, that famous picture of Bobby Moore lifting the Jules Rimet trophy would have been quite different if it were not for Pickles.
No, not the food but a dog named Pickles! So how did a black and white collie save the World Cup? AuthorJeffEyesRimmer Congratulations to Cameroon for winning the 2017 African Cup of Nations. I don’t think many would have predicted them to lift the trophy, I certainly didnt, after so many high profile players refused to play for them. So it is a credit to the team and management to pull together so well and win the tournament.
We won’t dwell on the fact that my tip, Algeria, was awful. It was a good tournament with several players impressing. I have picked 4 players that I think will be on various teams transfer radar come the summer after they made it into the team of the tournament. AuthorSports Billy Some interesting talking points coming out of the weekends EPL games. Below are a few key ones:
AuthorBoth Outcats The January transfer window slammed shut last week, its always an interesting window, even if the is hype is overblown. The January window is usually not one for big signings in the EPL with most of the big teams having settled squads. It’s typically a time for teams in trouble to try to boost their squads. As was the case this year, with Hull City bringing in no less than nine players, Crystal Palace trying to buy between 20 to 30 players (if Allardyce is to be believed) and we also had one of those weird swap deals happen.
In December last year we discussed the potential areas where EPL teams might try to improve and we thought we would revisit this and assess the outcomes of the window. AuthorJeffEyesRimmer It’s been goals galore this season in the W League. The record for most goals scored in a match was equalled (12 goals), Ashleigh Sykes scored 4 goals in one game and the quality of the football has been fantastic. This season has not seen any team truly dominate, with the minor premiership going down to the wire. Canberra Utd were the eventual winners of the Minor Premiership and now go into the finals as the favourites to win the grand final.
So who will be contesting the finals and who do we think we will be victorious? Well the semi-finals pit the best attacking teams against the best defensive teams so will it be attack or defence that make it to the final? |
