AuthorJeffEyesRimmer Continuing our recent theme of transfer articles there are a fair number of players that desperately need transfers to reinvigorate their careers. However, instead of focusing on players like Luke Shaw or Kieran Gibbs that need a move to improve I thought I would look at a few players that have fallen off the radar. I’m talking about players that I had actually forgotten played football. I have also listed are few teams that might be good destinations for these players. So let’s start: Carl Jenkinson
A total of 38 games for Arsenal in six years, that’s just a little bit sad really. He has been loaned out to West Ham for two seasons and then spent this season on the sidelines. Unfortunately for Jenkinson’s Arsenal career this might be the season that Wenger finally sheds himself of the loyalty and sentimentality for long term players and buys big. However, in the long run this might be a good thing for the player. He is a member of a select group of players that have one England cap including Jay Bothroyd, Joey Barton and Chris Kirkland, that’s esteemed company. He really needs to get game time and a step down is needed for him to do that otherwise he will remain with the one cap club. Be honest, did you recognise him in the photograph above? Team: West Ham, Watford Fabian Delph The big money move just simply hasn’t worked. I rate Delph quite highly and think he would be much better served going to a team that will allow him to play week in week out. Unfortunately, when you have a Man City midfield as good as they do and you are injury prone it’s hard to see you getting a good crack at the first team. A move to a team lower down the league is needed but its unlikely that Man City will allow one of their few home grown players leave. Based on current England performances a place in the England midfield is up for grabs, game time might get him on the plane to the World Cup next year if he is willing to move. Team: Newcastle, West Brom Callum McManaman I bet you had definitely forgotten about Callum McManaman. The 26 year old creative winger is probably in the wrong side when playing for West Brom (although any player is unless you a centre back). Back in 2013 he won the man of the match award for Wigan in their FA Cup win. How things have changed, in 2015 West Brom parted with $4.75 million for his services and since then he has only made 20 appearances for them. He was sent out on loan last season to Sheffield Wednesday but only made 9 appearances (7 of those were from the bench). Its time for the winger to cut his losses in the EPL and make a step down into the Championship to get games. Team: Anyone in the Championship Loic Remy Did you know he was still a Chelsea player? He was sent out on loan to Crystal Palace this season but an injury to his knee resulted in him being sent back to Chelsea after 5 appearances. The striker will certainly be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge next season but at only 30 years old he still has plenty left in the tank. It would be a shame to see him leave the league as I always rated him as a striker and don’t think he ever really got a chance at Chelsea. However, a move to China is more likely. Would a move back up north to Newcastle be good for both parties though? Team: Newcastle, China Georges-Kévin Nkoudou A total of 49 minutes played this season by the 22 year old winger. It is difficult though, Spurs are probably the best side for a young player to be playing for at the moment, and they give youth a chance and allow them to express themselves. That being said, Nkoudou needs to go out on loan to gain game time. When he was in France for Nantes and Marseille he played a combined 62 games in three seasons, it was a big drop in playing time last season. It will be interesting to see if he is given more of a chance this coming season or whether big money moves to make a push for the title means he is pushed further down the pecking order. If it’s the latter a loan move is desperately needed. Team: Southampton, Brighton Adnan Januzaj Its funny that Adnan Januzaj was the player that inspired this list. However, he played 25 times for a rotten Sunderland side this season. So miserable were those performances that I could not remember where he was playing. He was the poster boy at one stage of the new generation of youngsters coming through at Manchester United but has since lost his way. A spell a Dortmund was cut short due to attitude problems. Unlike others on this list he was given a chance (admittedly in a very poor side) last season but it seems he has regressed whereas others have kicked on. He needs a fresh start and potentially away from the EPL. A move to Spain might be beneficial. Team: Villarreal, Real Sociedad Some other honourable mentions include Ibrahim Afellay and Ron-Robert Zieler Anyone else I have forgotten about, who else do you think needs a move? |
