AuthorJeffEyesRimmer Following on from our previous article on managers being sacked after only a short time I thought a short article on the fastest sacking of all time was in order. While I think giving someone only 4 months to try to turn around a failing club is harsh how about… Ten minutes! Yes, that is officially the shortest time given to a manager. That ‘honour’ belongs to poor Leroy Rosenior.
The year was 2007 and Leroy Rosenior had the misfortune to be named the new manager of Torquay United, replacing Keith Curle. The job description was to get Torquay promoted back to the football League. Rosenior had managed them before during a previous successful spell on the south coast and so hope was high he could do it again. However, while Rosenior was being appointed it just so happened that the lead shareholder, Mike Bateson, had agreed to sell his majority 51% stake in the club to a consortium. Once the sale had gone through the new Chief Executive, Colin Lee, sacked Rosenior and appointed former Torquay player Paul Buckle as the new manager. This all resulted in Rosenior being sacked as the manager after 10 minutes by the new consortium. That’s 600 seconds in the job! Crazy stuff. To be fair to the new owners, Paul Buckle did spend 4 years managing Torquay and managed them to the FA Trophy Final in his first season and led them to promotion in his second season. He then kept them in the football league before leaving to join Bristol Rovers in 2011. So not a bad appointment in the end. It is likely that Rosenior will keep that record for some time though; I think its going to be hard to beat. Although credit where its due, Rosenior spoke about the sacking just after and he said ‘’It was a shock but we had a good laugh about it, obviously, they thought I'd done a fantastic job after ten minutes and let me go. They are going to sort me out a little bit of a compensation." Fair play, not many would take losing their job in such good humour.
