AuthorBoth Outcasts
Both of us here at Football Outcasts HQ grew up with the English Premier League. I was 8 years old when it started and just starting to get into football when the EPL first kicked off in 1992; I still remember my first Panini sticker album that I never did finish (I actually only ever managed to finish one – the 1995 to 1996 season).
Why the nostalgia? Well the English Premier League has turned 25 years old and as the league hits the quarter of a century milestone we thought we would look back at our favourite moments (plenty of highlight videos for you to remember too). While other, more reputable websites, look at the various big moments over those 25 years we thought we would look at those moments that we enjoyed – this is a more personal list.
Tom (JeffEyesRimmer):
Cardiff in the EPL and the Man City win Ok I had to start off with this one and I watched this live on the way to work in the early morning here in Australia. While the entire season was appalling for Cardiff this one moment was fantastic. After falling behind to a Edin Dzeko strike Cardiff hit back through Aron Gunnarsson. Then Fraizer Campbell popped up to score two goals in 8 minutes. Cardiff won the game 3-2 in the end I am was almost in tears on the train.
Phillippe Alberts chip
I watched this one live too, this goal just stuck with me. The match was won by Newcastle; they had humbled the champions Manchester United and were leading 4-0. Up stepped Phillippe Albert who noticing Peter Schmeichel was off his line in a crowed area he causally chipped the keeper from outside the box. It capped off a marvellous night for Newcastle who won the game 5-0.
The Liverpool v Newcastle (1st one)
I will let me fellow Outcast, who as many of you know is a Liverpool fan, describe this game. Put simply it’s the greatest game the EPL has ever seen, check it out below. You can’t win anything with kids I vividly remember Alan Hansen speaking these lines to Des Lynam on the Match of the Day sitting next to a very young Gary Lineker. It’s a statement that will haunt Hansen’s steps from the rest of his career. That famous line came from August 1995 when Manchester United played Aston Villa. United would have an average age of 21 for that game and it was a baptism of fire for them, losing the game 3-1. Their youngsters went on the make Hansen eat those words though as United cruised to win the title. I remember the game as well due to a lovely strike by one David Beckham and the awful grey kit United wore.
Tony Yeboah's Goal
I remember being in my local pub with my father back in Wales, in a predominantly rugby loving group and the Leeds vs Liverpool game was on. This goal resulted in even the die-hard rugby fans appreciating the pure beauty of it. Just watch and admire it, is there anything more lovely than a goal in off the bar?
Joe (Sports Billy):
The John Terry - Wayne Bridge handshake. Oh the drama! After the revelations came out of John Terry’s fling with Wayne Bridges former partner, the pre-match ritual of the standard premier league hand shake was all that the eyes of the footballing world were fixated on prior to the kick off between Chelsea and Man City at the Bridge. All the talk was that Bridge was going to ignore him and that both sets of team mates were furious at Terry’s actions, potentially leading to the game being a bit tasty in terms of tackles! As the squads started shaking hands fans everywhere paused for breath as Bridge ignored Terry live on our TV screens, before the game then set off at a furious pace and to a mentally loud atmosphere. By the end of the game Terry had had a bit of a stinker of a performance and Man City left Stamford Bridge with all three points.
Aguero' Winner against Qpr to win the League
Quite possibly the greatest end to a Premier League season ever? The last 5 minutes had it all - dramatic late winner for Man City; Man City wins their first Premier Title, ever! QPR somehow survive; both sets of fans end the game ecstatic! Amazing!
Klinsmann’s winning dive
In the summer of 1994 after the USA World Cup, the notoriously diving German Maestro arrived at White Hart Lane. After scoring his first goal for the club at Sheffield Wednesday he undertook a gloriously self-aware dive celebration which turned him in to a short lived (as he wasn’t there for long) fan favourite, whilst also picking up the Footballer of the Year award for that season. And the Klinsmann dive celebration was born. Arsène who?’ Such was The Evening Standard headline in Sep 1996 when a relatively unknown Frenchman arrived in England to take over at Arsenal from Bruce Rioch. He had been manager of Monaco (a team virtually everyone has heard of now!) but, you know, this was before the internet and non-stop satellite football TV coverage, so nobody really paid attention to foreign footy to the same degree as people do today. Two decades on, it increasingly feels more like “Arsène: Thank you!”. Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 (the first one!) This is the game that can legitimately claim to be the best in Premier League history and it pitched Liverpool’s white suit wearing Spice Boys against Kevin Keegan’s entertainers. Third against second in the league at the time, despite squandering a 12-point lead, the Toon still had hopes of winning their first Prem title and hit Anfield with a flourish. However, Liverpool – who had a mathematical chance of topping the table – were equally up for the game. Big Les Ferdinand opened the games scoring, and then the lead changed hands. But Newcastle’s title claim was scuppered when Stan Collymore’s thunder-bastard of a winner in the last moments of the game sent Anfield into raptures, and resulted in Kevin Keegan's infamous slump against a pitch side advertising board. Total scenes! So many great moments – What are some of yours? Others that spring to mind are the beach ball incident with Pepe Reina, Dennis Bergkamp’s goal against Leicester, Dyer and Bowyer having a fight when they both played for Newcastle, Peter Odemwingie turning up at QPR to try to force a move, the Arsenal Invincible season, Robert Pires and Henrys hilarious penalty, Sadio Manes fastest ever hat trick against Villa (2 mins 56 secs), Eric Cantonas chip goal and celebration. There is just so many and that’s why we love it! Image credit: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/04/01/21/32BC218600000578-3519761-image-a-5_1459544008144.jpg |
