AuthorJeffEyesRimmer It’s not the end of the season yet but the rumour mill is in full swing about the money that will be spent in the summer transfer window. Manchester United’s issues this season have been wildly documented, with gossip columns linking the Red Devils with every attacker known to man. If rumours were to be believed then United would only have attacking players next season. Well ten attacking players and one goalkeeper, and as fate would have it the goalkeeper is the one area that Jose may well have to address. It’s no secret that David De Gea has been on Real Madrids radar for some time and if were not for some dodgy fax machine 2 years ago he would likely be a Galactico already. However, it seems in recent weeks the potential transfer of De Gea Real has intensified and its looking more and more likely that United will lose another one of their best players to Madrid. So who are the potential replacements to De Gea? Below are a few options that I think Mourinho might want to consider: Jorden Pickford (Sunderland)
The youngster has quite simply been the only highlight of an otherwise horrendous season for Sunderland. With relegation confirmed it’s only a matter of time before the vultures began to circle. Unfortunately there isn’t much quality in the Sunderland side to scavenge but Pickford would be by far the best. The under 21 England international has looked assured behind a leaky defence and earned a PFA Young Player of the Year nomination on the back of making the second highest number of saves (109) in the league. He has also saved 72% of shots he has faced, that’s only behind Lloris and Heaton too. The lad is quality. Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan) The 18 year old has made the AC Milan number 1 shirt his own and he lives and breathes AC Milan. If he continues of the upward trajectory that saw him make his debut at 16 then he will become the next Buffon. As good as he is though I just can’t see Jose trusting the youngster with the number 1 jersey yet and I also can’t see Donnarumma moving from AC Milan any time soon either. He would likely cost a bomb too. I see this more as a potential in the future but United should still enquire about him, hes that good. Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid) With the potential departure of Diego Simone from Atletico Madrid to cashed up Inter Milan there is a chance that Oblak could also look for pastures new. The Slovenian has been ever present in the Simone side that challenged in La Liga and the Champions League, with the 24 year old probably being the perfect replacement for De Gea. He wouldn’t come cheap though. Sergio Romero (Man United) Bet you didn’t see this one coming did you. The argument here is that United already have a decent keeper already at the club in Romero. While he has made some errors, his performances recently in the domestic cups and Europa League show he has the ability, being Argentina’s number one helps too. With United likely to spend large sums of cash on outfield players this season to address the creativity and goal scoring issues they have had, saving some cash on the keeper could help with FFP rules. Although there are rumours that Inter Milan are keen to sign Romero, United could have an even bigger goal keeper crisis on their hands if that happens. Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City) While others in the Foxes team have floundered this season, Kasper Schmeichel has kept up his good form from the title winning season. His contributions to the Foxes run to the Champions League quarter finals being the highlight. He would likely cost United around $30 million but who wouldn’t want to see another Schmeichel in goal for United, things coming full circle. Other notable keepers that could be potential signings include:
Can you think of any other keepers that could be on the cards for United? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter. |
