AuthorSports Billy After a season of transition under Klopp last year, Liverpool have had a blistering start to this season with them currently sat in 4th spot in the Premier League, just 2 points off the top. Due to this start of the season (and ignoring their shock loss to Burnley) many are tipping them as potential title contenders for this season, with some bookies having them as 2nd favourites behind Manchester City. Now is this backing fanciful or do the Super Reds actually stand a chance? Attacking wise, they are an irresistible force with Mane, Lallana, Firmino and Coutinho's movement and attacking flare causing opposition all sorts of headaches and producing all manner of wonderful goals. These 4 switch and interchange their positions at will and so far opposition teams havent been able to stop this (bar a certain team from Lancashire who "parked the bus").
After a season of getting to grips with the squad and now having a summer to bring in some players of his own Klopp seems to have a squad that all believe in what he is preaching and that have all bought in to his Liverpool project. His "gegenpress" style of football is proving effective with most opposition unable to counter it on the pitch. Apart from Daniel Sturridge - who never smiles! - the squad seem a happy one, which in the modern age of pampered players happiness is a key component to success. No European competition this season for Liverpool will also allow the squad to stay fresher than the other big rivals and fully focus on a title tilt. It worked for them a few years back when they eventually finished 2nd and Leicester showed last season how no European distractions can enable a side to take advantage of battle weary opposition sides when it gets to the business end of the season. So what about the rivals for the League? Chelsea and Man U look far from finished products at the time of writing. Arsenal are Arsenal and we all know that when the weather moves in and the pitches don't allow for their pretty brand of football they go missing, but will eventually end up in 4th! Man City looked unstoppable a week or so ago, but would appear to not have the squad depth to deal with injuries and suspensions in certain key positions (although they will be a key title challenger if everyone's fit and playing). Spurs look a force this season, but will they have the stamina to go the distance this season? Personally I think with the current state of the other big sides in the league Liverpool have as good a chance as anyone this season to have a run at the title; however my main fear is their defence and goalkeeper situation which is not really good enough for a championship winning side as it lacks depth if injuries occur or form requires a shake up in the back line. Defending isn't the Premier Leagues strong point though, so having the tactic of just "out scoring your opponent" may just work in this instance! |
